Are You "Winning"?
When you live in the suburbs, there's a certain level of competition that you have to deal with. The phrase "keeping up with the Jones'" originated from this type of situation, and many families find themselves in a battle every year. Are you "winning" the competition or are you allowing your neighbors to outdo you?
The Competition
Holidays tend to bring out the competition between neighbors and families. At Christmas, your house has to be the one that looks the best. You put up Christmas lights, characters, trees, and other decorations.
Your neighbor then sees your decorations and has to take it one step farther. They put up lights, but they put theirs to music. They create some other special effects that make their house look even better.
Not to be outdone, you go back to the store and get even more stuff to put in your yard. The cycle is in the never-ending, and even if there is not a formal competition, a shadow competition exists.
While Christmas is usually the big one, families may even do this on other holidays. Around Halloween, they put out pumpkins, scarecrows, hay bails, and other decorations. Every member of the family has to have a costume, and look their absolute best.
Even times that aren't near any holiday can be competitive. You might put Garden flags in your yard, wreaths on the front door, and other decorations outside. This can sometimes lead to a friendly rivalry, and other times it can lead to an all-out fight or war between neighbors.
How to Handle It
If this sounds like your neighborhood, you are definitely not alone. Many people find themselves in the situation on a daily basis, and it can lead to a number of issues between neighbors.
When you find yourself in this situation, it's important to make sure that you are member to keep things civil. You should never get into a fight with your friends and neighbors over lawn decorations. Allow it to be done in good fun.
Even better, you could just decorate your house and not worry about what anyone else is doing. Although this might not be possible for you, you should do your best to keep things entertaining.
With your neighborhood all decked out, you could attract visitors and people from other areas who want to see all of the beautiful houses that are looking good.
